Walking Safaris

Makuleke Walking Trails
Arguably one of the few remaining true wilderness areas in Southern Africa, Makuleke, a 24 000 hectare private concession in the Kruger National Park, is highly regarded for its biodiversity and spectacular scenery, which is home to an extensive range of large and small mammals, with large herds of Elephant and Buffalo in evidence while the healthy populations of antelope, support a good population of feline predators. Sandstone and basalt ridges blend easily with mopane, acacia and broad-leafed woodlands, including spectacular specimens of the mighty Baobab Tree, while the Limpopo and Luvuvhu River floodplains provide a grassland buffer between the Riverine and famous Fever Tree Forests. Home to an impressive count of over 350 bird species, Makuleke caters to everyone’s wilderness needs. We offer two trails options in Makuleke.

Pafuri Trail - Classic untamed Africa
For those wanting a more “Close to Nature” type of bush experience, the Pafuri Walking Trail provides a more rustic tented camp type accommodation situated near the banks of the Luvuvhu River on the southern boundary of the Makuleke Concession. This unfenced fly-camp will allow you to enjoy a true wilderness experience in the heart of the Makuleke bush 24/7 throughout the duration of your trail where the day’s bush activities literally start as you open the flap of your tent.
Trails run seasonally from 1 April to 31 October and on a 4 day, 3 night basis commencing either on a Friday or Monday afternoon. The accommodation is in walk-in 2 man canvas dome tents, with ensuite chemical toilets. Two bucket type hot water showers are provided to wash the days’ dust away while all meals are prepared on an open fire.
Friday/Monday Afternoon – Arrival at camp, check in. Enjoy a short game drive, followed by sundowners overlooking the Luvuvhu River. Enjoy a delicious dinner cooked over the open fire and enjoy the uninterrupted sounds of the African bush.
Saturday/Tuesday Morning – Early rise, tea and coffee with rusks, then depart on a 3 – 4 hour trail from the camp. After trail, recover in the comfort of your tent after a delicious breakfast under the shade of nature’s air conditioners.
Saturday/Tuesday Afternoon – Either do a walk from the camp, exploring a new section of the reserve, or take a short game drive, followed by a 2 – 3 hour trail, followed by sundowners in your own private piece of heaven on Earth. Return to the camp for dinner, and time around the fire, to recap on the days amazing experiences.
Sunday/Wednesday – A repeat of the previous day’s activities
Monday/Thursday – Early rise, tea and coffee with rusks, then depart on a 3 – 4 hour trail from the camp. Enjoy breakfast at the camp, and then sadly, say goodbye, until your next stay with us in Makuleke.
